The Story Behind the Stone
Diamonds have been given as a gift of love since the sixteenth century when husbands would give a diamond to his wife in order toincrease the love in the relationship. During the same time period, diamonds were carried by judges to help predict the innocence or guilt of aprisoner. It was thought that if the diamond "clouded" during the trial, the captive was guilty, otherwise, he was innocent. Many other cultures also have beliefs concerning the origins and properties of diamonds. For example, ancient Greeks believed that diamonds were fallen stars that would grant good fortune to the wearer. Diamonds are also April's birthstone, the zodiac stone of Leo, and the tenth and sixtieth anniversary stones.
Diamonds are available in almost every color including red, blue, green, orange, yellow, "champagne" (brown), rose, and, ofcourse, colorless. They are formed miles below the ground atun imaginably high temperatures and pressures. Colorless diamonds consist of tightly compacted carbon tightly bonded to form the hardest stone on earth. Colored diamonds contain slight chemical impurities or have been exposed to radiation for extended periods of time. Before purchasing a diamond it should be positively identified through hardness and specific gravity tests.
